Earth to Sky
Judith Motzkin and Dorothy Palanza

Show Dates: August 31st to September 23rd
Opening August 31 from 7 to 10 p.m.

Artcurrent presents “earth to sky”, works in ceramic by Judith Motzkin and works on canvas by Dorothy Palanza (courtesy of Schoolhouse Gallery). Involvement with the elemental predominates the work of both artists, creating harmonies of paint to clay.

In describing her work, Motzkin says, “I work with the elemental–earth, and fire—and with an appreciation of the serendipity of the processes to echo the random beauty of nature, simple and mysterious, contemporary and timeless. Time on the outer cape has interested me in what washes ashore. American and Mexican Indian smoky firing techniques, Asian form and philosophies influence my clay work. Formal elegance in harmony with nature, and a devotion to living lightly on the earth are my intentions. “

Palanza talking of the works in “earth to sky”, “ These works deal with the elements of nature. Land, water, and sky are the predominant components within these paintings. Devoid of any fauna, these works focus on the spaces we inhabit. The images therefore, are compilations of sketches, photos, written notes, and at times elements collected (salts from the Dead Sea are contained in the painting “Looking Over to Jordan”) from places where I spent time experientially engaged. Unlike a painting of a specific location, these landscapes are remembrances of my encounter. “
